The SP25 marks the entry-level 2.5-litre model, with bigger wheels, more power and a spec based on the 2.0-litre Maxx Sport. The bigger engine brings a reasonable bump in power, with 138kW and 250Nm, and can be had with a six-speed auto ($27,990) or manual ($25,990).

For your money you get 18-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry and start, dual-zone climate control, auto wipers and headlights, six-speaker stereo with DAB and Bluetooth and USB, rear parking sensors, remote central locking, keyless start, cruise control, gear-shift paddles (auto), sat nav, leather steering wheel, reversing camera and a space-saver spare.

Mazda's 'MZD Connect' looks after the entertainment and sat nav with a 7.0-inch touchscreen and rotary-dial controlled system, but it's still missing Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The safety package includes six airbags, ABS, stability and traction controls, forward and reverse AEB, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert.
